Fondazione Memmo e Gasworks sono felici di annunciare che Alessandro Di Pietro (1987, Messina) sarà in residenza presso Gasworks, a Londra, nella prima parte del 2025, nell’ambito della borsa per artiste e artisti residenti in Italia sostenuta dalla Fondazione Memmo.
Di Pietro realizza sculture, film e installazioni che sfidano i concetti di sintesi o completezza; traendo spesso ispirazione dalle strutture del cinema narrativo e dalle atmosfere sfumate della narrativa speculativa, mescola riferimenti artistici e biografici per costruire realtà mutevoli e distorte. Nel suo progetto più recente, Ghostwriting Paul Thek, Di Pietro ha prodotto un nucleo di nuove opere attribuite postume all’artista Paul Thek (1933-1988), combinando fatti e finzione per evidenziare le relazioni tra l’artista scomparso e altri artisti contemporanei.
Durante la sua residenza, l’artista svilupperà nuovi lavori attorno a un dialogo immaginario tra due figure familiari della storia dell’arte e della musica: Marcel Duchamp e Brian Molko, il cantante della band britannica Placebo. Il dialogo tra questi due personaggi indagherà in modo giocoso le tensioni e le contraddizioni del vivere in una società post-capitalista.
Fondazione Memmo and Gasworks are glad to announce that Alessandro Di Pietro (b. 1987, Messina) will undertake a residency for Italian artists at Gasworks in 2025. The residency is supported by Fondazione Memmo.
Alessandro Di Pietro makes sculptures, films and installations that resist ideas of synthesis or wholeness. Often drawing upon the structures of narrative cinema and the hazy imagery of speculative fiction, Di Pietro blends artistic and biographical references to build mutable, distorted realities within his works. In his recent project Ghostwriting Paul Thek, Di Pietro produced new artworks which he posthumously attributed to the artist Paul Thek (1933-1988), combining fact with fiction to highlight the relationships between the late artist and other artists working today.
During his residency, the artist will develop a series of new works around an imagined discussion between two familiar figures from art and musical history: Marcel Duchamp and Brian Molko, the lead singer of British alternative rock band, Placebo. The dialogue between these two characters will playfully examine the tensions and contradictions of living in post-capitalist society.
