François Marcadon. Il miracolo di Urakawa
Sabato 7 ottobre 2023, in occasione della Giornata del Contemporaneo, la Fondazione Pastificio Cerere ospita IL MIRACOLO DI URAKAWA, mostra che racconta il progetto di François Marcadon realizzato nel 2019 in Giappone, grazie al sostegno della Federazione Wallonie-Bruxelles e dell’Equipe Asbl- Réseau de psychiatrie sociale.
La mostra, allestita nel silos della Fondazione Pastificio Cerere, resterà aperta al pubblico fino al 14 ottobre 2023.
François Marcadon con la sua pratica artistica riflette sulla relazione tra mente e corpo, di quest’ultimo indaga la vanità e la transitorietà, la plasticità e il potenziale metamorfico, insieme alla sua finitezza incondizionata, la sua mortalità. Esteticamente eleganti, le sue opere rivelano una dimensione fantasmagorica inquietante, svelando la mitologia personale dell’artista, onirica e spietata allo stesso tempo.
IL MIRACOLO DI URAKAWA presenta 30 acquarelli e un testo scritto sotto forma di diario da Marcadon nel 2019 durante il soggiorno svolto nel nord del Giappone, a Urakawa, dove l’artista ha lavorato con l’istituto psichiatrico Bethel House, struttura che si dedica a pratiche terapeutiche innovative, distinguendosi nel panorama della salute mentale giapponese grazie all’utilizzo della terapia della parola e alla creazione di un rapporto di fiducia tra operatori e pazienti, in cui ogni differenziazione viene abbattuta.
Ad ottobre 2023 François Marcadon, con il sostegno della Wallonie-Bruxelles International (WBI), svolgerà una residenza a Roma per continuare la sua indagine sulle fragilità psichiche, il cui risultato a lungo termine sarà quello di tracciare un panorama della follia in diversi paesi.
Durante la sua permanenza nella capitale, l’artista confronterà le pratiche contemporanee di salute mentale applicate all’interno della Comunità Reverie con quelle del passato, concentrandosi sul manicomio di Santa Maria della Pietà, una delle strutture psichiatriche più antiche d’Europa creata nel XVI secolo, oggi chiusa ma il cui sito rimane accessibile.
La Comunità Reverie è una organizzazione senza fini di lucro fondata nel 1989 operante nel campo della prevenzione, cura e riabilitazione per persone con disagi psichici di varia natura e gravità. Si propone come scopo principale lo studio e la ricerca applicata nel campo della terapia della sofferenza psichica nello spirito della legge 180/78 e successive norme statali e regionali che regolano la riforma psichiatrica.
Anche in Italia Marcadon si concentrerà sul rapporto tra i pazienti e il personale della struttura sanitaria con l’obiettivo di individuare dei profili psicologici tipici e documentare, in futuro, questa seconda fase del progetto con altri ritratti. Inoltre, a Roma, l’artista intervisterà René Stockman, Superiore Generale della Congregazione dei Fratelli della Carità dal 2000 e specialista in assistenza psichiatrica, per iniziare una discussione relativa alle posizioni del Vaticano sulla salute mentale.
François Marcadon (Nantes, 1981) vive e lavora a Bruxelles in Belgio. Dopo aver frequentato l’École Supérieure des Beaux-arts -BFA- (Nantes) nel 2004, e successivamente aver conseguito la laurea come assistente didattico presso École Nationale des Beaux-arts & IUFM (Bourges) nel 2005, ha intrapreso una lunga serie di residenze artistiche tra Europa e Asia che hanno contribuito molto alla definizione della suo stile personale. Tra le residenze più significative: Centre d’art contemporain, Pontmain (2007); Centre Hospitalier Universitaire, Angers (2008); Feng Chia University, Taichung (2013). Borse di studio: Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelle per Bethel House, Sapporo & Urakawa (2019) e WBI per la Comunità Reverie, Roma (2023). Le sue opere sono state esposte sia in luoghi pubblici che privati. Tra le principali mostre personali si ricordano: Le Trouble, le Double et l’Oubli, L’Atelier, Nantes, 2023; Même les oiseaux ne naissent pas sans tête, Neuf Gallery, Bruxelles, 2021; Ah…l’amour !, L’Orangerie, Bastogne, 2017; Look and feel your best, MOCA, Taipei, 2014; Golden days, Point Éphémère, Paris, 2013.
On Saturday, 7 October 2023, on the occasion of Giornata del Contemporaneo, Fondazione Pastificio Cerere is hosting THE MIRACLE OF URAKAWA, an exhibition recounting the project François Marcadon carried out in Japan in 2019, thanks to the support of the Wallonie-Bruxelles Federation and the Equipe Asbl-Réseau de psychiatrie sociale.
The exhibition, to be set up in the silos of Fondazione Pastificio Cerere, will be open to the public until 14 October 2023.
With his practice, François Marcadon reflects on the relationship between mind and body; of the latter, he investigates the vanity and transience, the plasticity and metamorphic potential, along with its unconditional finiteness – its mortality. His aesthetically elegant works reveal a disturbing phantasmagorical dimension, revealing the artist’s personal mythology, which is both dreamlike and ruthless.
THE MIRACLE OF URAKAWA presents 30 watercolours and a text written in the form of a diary by Marcadon during his stay in northern Japan in 2019. In Urakawa, the artist worked with the psychiatric institute Bethel House, a facility dedicated to innovative therapeutic practices, distinguishing itself in the Japanese mental health scene thanks to the use of talk therapy and the creation of a relationship of trust between operators and patients, in which all differentiation is broken down.
In October 2023, with the support of Wallonie-Bruxelles International (WBI), François Marcadon will carry out a residency in Rome to continue his investigation into psychic fragility, the long-term outcome of which will be the tracing of a panorama of madness in different countries.
During his stay in the capital, the artist will compare contemporary mental health practices applied within Comunità Reverie with those of the past, focusing on the Santa Maria della Pietà asylum, one of the oldest psychiatric facilities in Europe; created in the 16th century, it is now closed, but the site remains accessible.
Comunità Reverie is a non-profit organisation founded in 1989 operating in the field of prevention, treatment and rehabilitation for people with mental disorders of various kinds. Its main purpose is to carry out studies and applied research in the field of therapy of mental suffering in the spirit of Italian Law 180/78 and subsequent state and regional regulations governing psychiatric reform.
Also in Italy, Marcadon will focus on the relationship between the patients and the staff of the healthcare facility, with the aim of identifying typical psychological profiles and documenting this second phase of the project with further portraits in the future. In addition, in Rome, the artist will interview René Stockman, Superior General of the Congregation of the Brothers of Charity since 2000 and a specialist in psychiatric care, to initiate a discussion on the Vatican’s position on mental health.
François Marcadon (Nantes, 1981) lives and works in Brussels, Belgium.
