PichiAvo. Diaspasis

Wunderkammern è lieta di presentare Diaspasis, la personale che inaugura la nuova collaborazione della galleria con PichiAvo, duo di street artist valenciano noto per lo stile inconfondibile che coniuga graffiti e arte classica. Con curatela di Giuseppe Pizzuto, Diaspasis rappresenta l’evoluzione dell’arte dei PichiAvo che, insieme alla ricerca estetica, si focalizza qui, senza rinunciare all’esplosività dei colori, su un’indagine sulle potenzialità della materia. Diàspasis – in greco separazione – descrive infatti la tecnica che il duo ha iniziato a esplorare due anni fa: i PichiAvo dipingono i soggetti con vernice spray, acrilico e olio su un pannello di cartongesso e poi lo rompono, ricavandone più frammenti. In mostra saranno esposti più di trenta lavori tra bozzetti su carta e dipinti su cartongesso, tutte opere dai bordi irregolari, modellate minuziosamente dagli artisti che le hanno concepite quasi come fossero sculture, inquadrature, spesso dettagli, di soggetti visti e fotografati in tutto il mondo.
“Ciascuna opera è pensata per poter vivere e essere allestita autonomamente o per essere, in alcuni casi, parte di un dittico o un trittico” spiegano i due giovani artisti. Se da un lato si ispirano ai manufatti archeologici, che sono frammentari e spesso collocati in diversi musei pur appartenendo ad un medesimo nucleo, dall’altro invitano i visitatori a giocare, ricostruendo come in un puzzle storie e collegamenti tra soggetti all’interno del percorso espositivo. I soggetti parlano della cultura mediterranea alla quale apparteniamo e che il mito aiuta a trasmettere, in ogni luogo del mondo, al di là delle differenze di lingua e di religione. Il mito ci unisce come esseri umani.
Il corpus di opere è stato ideato dagli artisti anche per regalare al visitatore e al collezionista l’illusione di poter ammirare nello spazio interno della galleria frammenti di interventi che i PichiAvo realizzano solitamente nello spazio urbano; il cartongesso restituisce l’effetto dei materiali e dei colori con cui gli artisti più si interfacciano nella loro produzione outdoor.
In occasione di Diaspasis verrà rilasciata una print in edizione limitata, firmata e numerata dagli artisti, che sarà sempre legata alla tecnica Diaspasis in quanto i bordi saranno frastagliati in linea con la ricerca sulla materia condotta da PichiAvo.
Wunderkammern vi aspetta all’inaugurazione mercoledì 20 settembre alle 18.30 presso la sede di via Nerino 2, Milano. Gli artisti parteciperanno all’evento.
PichiAvo è un duo formato da Juan Antonio (Pichi, 1977) e Álvaro (Avo, 1985). I due street artist si sono incontrati nel 2007 sulla scena dei graffiti a Valencia e sin da allora hanno rinunciato all’individualità artistica a favore di una produzione unica caratterizzata da un approccio innovativo e dalla combinazione equilibrata di arte classica e arte urbana. Riconosciuti per la loro abilità nel creare connessioni tra pittura e scultura in contesti urbani, PichiAvo lavorano anche in studio e esplorano una vasta gamma di materiali e approcci pittorici. La loro arte dà vita a una mitologia urbana capace di far interagire persone appartenenti a diversi contesti sociali, tutte accomunate da uno stesso immaginario culturale classico e da un profondo legame che le caratterizza in quanto esseri umani. Il murale realizzato per il North West Walls Festival in Belgio nel 2015 ha dato avvio alla loro carriera internazionale e ad oggi PichiAvo contano mostre in gallerie e al CCCC Centre del Carme Cultura Contemporània di Valencia oltre ad essere stati coinvolti in prestigiosi progetti corporate, ne è esempio la collaborazione con Bulgari a Roma nel 2018, e sociali che nel 2019 li ha visti realizzare una scultura monumentale alta 26 metri per il festival Fallas di Valencia. I murales dei PichiAvo si trovano in tutto il mondo, in oltre 20 paesi.
Wunderkammern is pleased to present Diaspasis, the solo exhibition inaugurating the gallery’s new collaboration with PichiAvo, a Valencian street artist duo known for their unmistakable style that combines Graffiti and Classical Art. Curated by Giuseppe Pizzuto, Diaspasis represents the evolution of PichiAvo’s art, which, along with aesthetic research, focuses here, without renouncing the explosiveness of colors, on an investigation into the power of matter. Diàspasis – in Greek, separation – actually describes the technique that the duo started exploring two years ago: the PichiAvo paint their subjects with spray paint, acrylic and oil on a plasterboard panel and then they break it up, obtaining several fragments. On display will be more than thirty works, including sketches on paper and paintings on plasterboard, all artworks with crumbled edges, meticulously shaped by the artists who conceived them almost as if they were sculptures, shots, often details, of subjects seen and photographed all over the world.
“Each work is thought to live and be set up independently or to be, in some cases, part of a diptych or triptych” explain the two young artists. While inspired by archaeological artifacts, which are fragmentary and often located in different museums despite belonging to the same nucleus, they also invite visitors to play, reconstructing like in a puzzle stories and connections between subjects within the exhibition itinerary. The subjects speak of the Mediterranean culture to which we belong and which myth helps to spread, everywhere in the world, beyond differences of language and religion. The myth connects us as human beings.
The body of works has also been conceived by the artists in order to give the visitor and collector the illusion of admiring in the interior space of the gallery fragments of interventions that PichiAvo usually realize in urban settings; the drywall reproduces the effect of materials and colors that the artists most closely interface with in their outdoor production.
On the occasion of Diaspasis, a limited-edition print signed and numbered by the artists will be released. It will also be linked to the Diaspasis technique; it will in fact have irregular edges in line with PichiAvo’s research into the material.

PichiAvo is a duo formed by Juan Antonio (Pichi, 1977) and Álvaro (Avo, 1985). The two street artists met in 2007 on the graffiti scene in Valencia and have ever since shunned artistic individuality in pursuit of a unique body of work characterized by an innovative approach and the balanced combination of Classical and Urban Art. Recognized for their skill at creating connections between painting and sculpture in urban settings, PichiAvo also work in the studio embracing a wide and versatile range of material and painterly approaches. Their art gives life to an urban mythology capable of bringing together people from different social backgrounds, all sharing the same classical cultural imagery and a deep bond that characterizes them as human beings. The mural they painted for the North West Walls Festival in Belgium in 2015 launched their international career, and to date PichiAvo count exhibitions in galleries and at the CCCC Centre del Carme Cultura Contemporània in Valencia as well as being involved in prestigious corporate projects, an example of which is the collaboration with Bulgari in Rome in 2018, and social which in 2019 saw them creating a 26-metre-high monumental sculpture for the Fallas festival in Valencia.
