Polys Peslikas. Obsidian
Per la sua seconda mostra personale a Milano da Vistamare, Polys Pelikas presenta tre corpi di lavori.
Il primo consiste in un gruppo di piccoli quadri sui quali l’artista ha iniziato a lavorare quest’estate durante una residenza ad Atene; il secondo è una serie di opere su carta, il terzo è un insieme di oggetti trovati, ognuno composto da materiale stampato.
Nei dipinti di Peslikas la luce funge da catalizzatore: inondando le forme e ammorbidendone i contorni, scompone i volumi e la materia.
Queste opere non raffigurano in modo esplicito eventi e non narrano un racconto. Sono semplici e spesso ritraggono delle figure in pose intimiste. Mirano a posizionarsi in relazione a qualcosa che potrebbe aver influenzato il corso degli eventi. Suggeriscono che ci sia una storia, mescolando realtà e finzione come fa ogni narrativa, ma rimangono indeterminate e hanno la tendenza a sgretolarsi.
Polys Peslikas (Limassol, Cipro) vive e lavora tra Londra e Nicosia. Tra le mostre recenti si ricordano Arch, (Atene), Radio Athènes (Atene), Mackintosh Lane (Londra), Vistamare (Milano), Villa Medici (Roma), Shanaynay (Parigi), NiMAC (Nicosia), Halle 14 (Lipsia) e la Biennale II di Praga. Nel 2015/16 è stato artista in residenza alla Künstlerhaus Bethanien di Berlino. Nel 2017 ha rappresentato Cipro alla 57ª Biennale di Venezia.
For his second exhibition with Vistamare in Milan, Polys Peslikas presents three bodies of work.
The first is consisted by a group of small-scale paintings that he started in Athens during an artist residency this summer. The second features a series of works on paper, and the third is a display of found printed material.
For the painted surface the light acts as a catalyst, bathing the forms, while visually breaking the volume and matter into softer contours.
These works do not explicitly depict events or tell a story. Their representations are simple, often featuring figures in intimate poses. What they aim to do is position themselves in relation to something that may have influenced the events. They create the impression of a story, blending fact and fiction, much like any narrative, but they remain open-ended and tend to fall apart.
Polys Peslikas (Limassol, Cyprus) lives and works between London and Nicosia. Among recent shows: Arch, (Athens), Radio Athènes (Athens), Mackintosh Lane (London), Vistamare (Milan), Villa Medici (Rome), Shanaynay (Paris), NiMAC (Nicosia), Halle 14 (Lipsia) Prague Biennale ll. In 2015/16 he had a residency at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin. In 2017 he represented Cyprus at the 57ª Biennale di Venezia.
