Raúl De Nieves. Betwixt the Hands of Time
APALAZZOGALLERY è lieta di annunciare la seconda mostra personale di Raúl De Nieves negli spazi della galleria. Intitolata Betwixt the Hands of Time, l’esposizione si snoda attorno ad un momento di centrale importanza per l’evoluzione della pratica creativa dell’artista, quel momento chiave della vita che si verifica nel passaggio dall’infanzia all’età adulta.
Dispiegandosi nel costante dialogo tra la memoria del passato e la percezione del presente, la mostra tocca una varietà di temi ricorrenti nella pratica e nella poetica di De Nieves: dalla celebrazione della maternità e il legame con il proprio patrimonio culturale, alla consapevolezza di diventare adulti che, per l’artista, coincide con la volontà di rispettare le tradizioni familiari, assimilate durante i nostri innumerevoli momenti di apprendimento e di scambio.
Il tema dell’avvento dell’età adulta ricorre in quelle che l’artista chiama “pelli celebrative”: figure che abitano gli spazi della galleria alla stregua di creature sconosciute che solo vagamente ricordano sembianze umane. Questi costumi indossabili ci parlano di ornamento di sè: sono messi in scena come simbolo di trasformazione, avendo quel magico potere di tramutarci in qualcun altro, di farci sentire più vecchi e maturi. Permettendoci di giocare un nuovo ruolo, questi indumenti decorativi ci trasportano nella dimensione del fantastico e tentano di rendere reale ciò che spesso sogniamo di essere. Sta quindi a noi lasciare che il sogno si connetta con la realtà.
Accanto ai costumi decorati da perline, gli abiti lavorati a maglia testimoniano il forte legame affettivo che l’artista ha con la madre. Avendo imparato da lei a cucire, queste opere sono per lui una sincera celebrazione della maternità e allo stesso tempo dichiarano l’evoluzione del loro rapporto, evidenziando come ora possa rivestire il ruolo di madre educatrice, e di come, in virtù delle esperienze vissute e dell’età adulta, possa godere di un reciproco scambio di insegnamenti.
I grandi pannelli di vetro colorato sono messi in scena nella sala centrale come simboli di forza interiore. Queste opere tentano di rappresentare il modo in cui decidiamo di mostrare la nostra vulnerabilità agli altri, incoraggiandoci a mostrare la fragilità come un modo per dimostrare la parte più interiore ed emotiva di noi stessi. Queste opere parlano anche del tempo e dell’effimero nel modo in cui sono in grado di mostrare le immagini quando vengono toccate dalla luce, e allo stesso tempo si congelano quando lasciate nell’oscurità, ma ci ricordano anche temi come la bellezza della creazione, la forza della passione, la dicotomia tra lotta e vittoria e tra sofferenza e conquista.
Le installazioni Celebration (mother) e The gift (child), sprigionano quel potere magico e ancestrale di accumulare nuova energia ogni volta che vengono mostrate al pubblico. Sebbene separate e impregnate di una propria forza energetica indipendente, queste opere vivono nella costante tensione di riconnettersi e unirsi in una nuova forma.
APALAZZOGALLERY is pleased to announce the second solo exhibition by Raúl De Nieves in the gallery spaces. Titled Betwixt the Hands of Time, the show revolves around a moment of central importance for the evolution of the artist’s creative practice, that key moment in life that occurs in the transition from childhood to adulthood.
Unfolding within the constant dialogue between the memory of the past and the perception of the present, the exhibition touches on a variety of recurring themes in the artist’s practice and poetics: from the celebration of motherhood and the connection to his cultural heritage to the awareness of becoming an adult which, for the artist, coincides with the willingness and commitment to respect the family traditions we have assimilated during our countless moments of learning and exchange.
The theme of the advent of adulthood recurs in what the artist calls ‘celebratory skins’: the figures that inhabit the gallery spaces as unknown creatures that only vaguely resemble human features. These wearable costumes speak to us of self-adornment: they are staged as a symbol of transformation, having that magical power to transform us into someone else, to make us feel older and more mature. Allowing us to play a new role, these ornamental garments transport us into the dimension of the fantastic and attempt to make real what we often dream of being like. It is then up to us to let the dream connect with reality.
Alongside the beaded costumes, the knitted dresses testify to the strong emotional bond the artist has with his mother. Having learned to knit from her, with these works the artist is the spokesperson of the common and sincere desire to celebrate motherhood, and at the same time declares the evolution of their own relationship, highlighting how he can now dress the role of the educating mother, and how by virtue of the experiences lived and adulthood, he can enjoy a mutual exchange of teachings.
The artist’s signature large stained-glass panels are staged in the main gallery room as symbols of inner strength. These works attempt to represent how we choose to reveal our vulnerability to others, encouraging us to see that showing fragility is a way to demonstrate the more inner, emotional part of ourselves. These works also speak of time and the ephemeral in the way they are able to show images when touched by light and likewise freeze when left in darkness, but they also remind us of themes such as the beauty of creation, the power of passion, the dichotomy between struggle and victory and between suffering and conquest.
The two installations Celebration (mother) and The Gift (child), unleash that magical, ancestral power of accumulating new energy each time they are shown to the public. Although separate and imbued with their own independent energetic force, these works live in the constant tension of reconnecting and uniting in a new form.
