Robert Davis. One of These Days. One of These Days
A Torino, dal 14 febbraio al 14 marzo 2022, Luce Gallery è lieta di presentare la mostra personale “One of These Days. One of These Days.” di Robert Davis.
“One of These Days. One of These Days.” è una nuova serie composta da trenta acquerelli di piccolo formato, che invita l’osservatore ad una fruizione più intima. L’artista americano si concentra sull’“adesso”, una dimensione temporale che definisce come riflesso del trauma, della politica, del disordine sociale e della violenza, che stiamo subendo collettivamente e che, in così tante forme e momenti diversi, l’uomo ha sempre affrontato. Sia attraverso la lente della storia che della storia dell’arte, i suoi dipinti suggeriscono una narrazione transistorica che tocca il ciclo di nascita, morte e tutti i conflitti nel mezzo.
Per questo lavoro concepito classicamente, Davis ha scelto riferimenti iconografici facilmente accessibili, che abbracciano la cultura popolare e l’arte dei grandi maestri del passato, immagini che sono intrise di una propria logica referenziale o riecheggiano le realtà attuali indipendentemente dalla loro epoca, tra cui: la copertina di un album rock emblematico dei Pink Floyd, che è un omaggio al romanzo “La fattoria degli animali” di George Orwell; una fotografia dell’assassina Frankie Baker, che ha ispirato la ballata dell’omicidio “Frankie and Johnny” di Bill Dooley; i capolavori “Giuditta con la testa di Oloferne” di Cristofano Allori e “La Parabola dei Ciechi” di Pieter Bruegel il Vecchio.
Il concetto di circolarità, espresso sia nel lavoro che nel titolo della mostra, si manifesta più direttamente nelle opere multiple: tre dello stesso ritratto di Marvin Gaye, quattro versioni di “Ophelia” secondo John Everett Millais, due dipinti dell’iconico “scheletro” dei Grateful Dead.
Lo stile di appropriazione di Davis potrebbe essere inteso come una sorta di esercizio psicologico. L’atto di ripetizione, ritorno e rivisitazione, che caratterizza il suo lavoro, implica l’”elaborazione” di un momento della contemporaneità molto gravato dalla sua lunga storia.
Robert Davis, nato nel 1970 a Norfolk in Virginia (Stati Uniti), vive e lavora a Brooklyn, New York. Ha studiato pittura alla School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Il suo lavoro è stato esposto al Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk (2021), CUE Art Foundation, New York (2018), Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (2016), CCA Andratx Kunsthalle, Maiorca (2015), Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte, Napoli (2014), Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (2009, 2003), The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh (2008), Kunstmuseum Kloster Unser Lieben Frauen, Magdeburg (2008). Più recentemente, nel 2021, l’artista è stato coinvolto nella mostra collettiva “There’s There There” di Hauser & Wirth Southampton, organizzata da Rashid Johnson.

In Turin, from February 14 to March 14, 2022, Luce Gallery is pleased to present the solo show “One of These Days. One of These Days.” of Robert Davis.
“One of These Days. One of These Days.” is a newly created series of thirty intimately scaled watercolors. For these works, the American artist focuses on the “now”: a time that he defines as a reflection of the trauma, politics, social upheaval, and violence we are collectively enduring, and in so many different forms and times have always faced. Through the lens of both history and art history, his paintings intimate a transhistorical narrative that touches on the cycle of birth, death, and all struggles in between.
For his classically rendered work, Davis chose readily available imagery that spans popular culture and high art, images that are imbued with their own referential logic or, regardless of age, echo current realities. These include, among others: a classic rock album cover by Pink Floyd that is a homage to George Orwell‘s classic novel “Animal Farm”; a photograph of the killer Frankie Baker, who inspired the murder ballad “Frankie and Johnny” by Bill Dooley; old master paintings “Judith with the Head of Holofernes” by Cristofano Allori and “The Parable of the Blind” by Pieter Bruegel the Elder.
The notion of circularity in both the work and the exhibition title plays out more directly in pieces rendered multiple times: three of the same portrait of Marvin Gays, four versions of “Ophelia” after John Everett Millais, two paintings of the Grateful Dead’s iconic “skeleton”.
Davis’s style of appropriation might be understood as a kind of psychological exercise. His work’s reliance on repetition, returning, and revisiting implies a “working through” of a contemporary moment so burdened by its long history.
