Quartz Studio è lieto di presentare Rose Related, la prima personale in Italia dell’artista di origine turca Seda Hepsev (Istanbul, 1978), a cura di Caterina Fondelli.

Seda Hepsev ha concepito un progetto site specific che s’ispira all’approccio rivoluzionario e anticonformista alla femminilità sviluppato dalla scrittrice Hilda Doolittle (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA, 1886), sia nella sua carriera sia nei versi della poesia del 1915 “The Garden”. Il desiderio di dar vita a un nuovo ambiente in cui i confini delle strutture di potere e standardizzazione vengano contestati e riletti è creato tramite una sagace interpretazione e una giocosità applicate alla pratica ed allo spazio. L’operazione di procedere per strati, già alla base della poetica di Hepsev sia idealmente sia concretamente, rispecchia l’immaginario essenziale e diretto della scrittura di Doolittle.

La semplicità sprigiona un turbinio di sensi. Nell’entrare gradualmente in Rose Related, una sorta di personificazione degli elementi naturali analizzati nella poesia, chi guarda è incoraggiato a costruirsi un percorso personale negli imperativi sociali del presente. I pezzi di metallo geometrici che ci accolgono all’ingresso della mostra riflettono la perseveranza delle rose, che fioriscono nel più inclemente degli ambienti, fra le pietre che gravano sull’istinto libero del soffio vitale. Catturato dalla posizione dinamica dei segni nello spazio, lo sguardo continua la sua danza fino a raggiungere la leggerezza e l’evanescenza pure nel dipinto su tessuto dell’artista. Fungono da racconti con il finale aperto, in cui le fasi universali dell’umanità sono narrate con l’attitudine fluida, che precipita e sprofonda per poi quasi spiccare il volo, con cui Hilda cita i miti greci nelle sue composizioni.

Nelle opere sono rappresentate le presenze dicotomiche di calore e vento, che esprimono rispettivamente la repressione e la via al sollievo e al cambiamento. Esistono nello spazio liminale fra pittura, scultura e installazione, e radunano fili, cavi, luci e ombre. C’è un movimento, un’elegante pirouette simile ad una brezza, impercettibile ma al tempo stesso forte, che preme verso una nuova visione dello sfarzoso “giardino” della rappresentazione e dell’identità. L’intero progetto è permeato da un sentimento peculiare: la libertà e l’indifferenza che Hilda Doolittle espresse contro i limiti delle convenzioni del suo tempo. Questo atteggiamento incurante non è frivolo, ma sgorga dall’io e dalla consapevolezza sociale per giungere alla capacità di travalicare l’orizzonte concepibile.

Rose Related di Seda Hepsev non è un dialogo con sé stessa, né un messaggio rivolto esclusivamente al pubblico femminile. È un importante manifesto per l’autorealizzazione di tutti. – Caterina Fondelli

Seda Hepsev (Istanbul, Turchia, 1978) vive e lavora a Zurigo, in Svizzera. Dopo la laurea in Pittura presso la Facoltà di Belle Arti dell’Università di Marmara (2000) ha conseguito un master e un dottorato in Arte presso la Facoltà di Arte e Design della Yildiz Technical University (2013). È stata candidata agli Swiss Art Awards (2022) a Messe Basel, ha vinto lo Zürich Art Grant (2022) alla Helmhaus e ha partecipato alle seguenti mostre: Grosse Regionale, Alte Fabrik, Rapperswil (2021), Mediality & Materiality, Förderverein Aktuelle Kunst, Münster (2021). La sua ricerca comprende ricamo, scultura e installazioni che hanno la loro origine nei disegni. Al centro del suo lavoro la passione, lo spazio e la soggettività del corpo femminile. Nelle opere, che appaiono fragili, incomplete e stratificate, ricorrono spesso parti del corpo, animali, personaggi distorti e motivi tradizionali. L’approccio artistico è costruito mediante un linguaggio visivo che spazia da allegorie storiche, iconografie, illustrazioni e mitologie fino alle immagini contemporanee. La pittura stratificata su tessuto, da cui penzolano filati e fili di ferro, fa pensare a storie in cui realtà e finzione sono incerte e i cui protagonisti restano misteriosi e le motivazioni vaghe. Le dinamiche interpersonali inquiete, rese con umorismo, empatia e a volte con il gusto dell’assurdo, sono il fulcro visivo dei suoi lavori. Hepsev rende visibili le storie tramite tecniche artistiche che richiedono “pazienza e compassione”, dotate dell’intimità e della fragilità di forme umane e non umane che si trasformano in identità fantastiche.

Seda Hepsev has conceived a site-specific project that draws on the revolutionary, unconventional approach to femininity developed by the writer Hilda Doolittle (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, U.S., 1886). She developed her approach throughout her career and especially in the verses of her 1915 poem “The Garden.” Seda seeks to create a new context, challenging and re-reading the boundaries of power structures through an intelligent interpretation and a playfulness applied both to her practice and the space. The process of proceeding by layers, which was already at the foundation of Hepsev’s poetics, both conceptually and practically, mirrors the spare, direct imagery of Doolittle’s writing. Simplicity unleashes a multitude of meanings. As visitors gradually enter Rose Related, conceived as a personification of the natural elements discussed in the poem, they are encouraged to take their own path through present-day social imperatives. Geometric metal pieces greet us at the entrance of the exhibition, suggesting the perseverance of roses thriving in the harshest of environments, among stones seen as obstacles to the living breath’s instinct toward freedom. The gaze is invited to continue in the dance, drawn in by the dynamic positioning of visual signs in the space to then reach pure lightness and evanescence in the artist’s textile painting. The works act as open-ended stories, where universal human stages are recounted in a flowing, falling, collapsing, almost flying way like that which Hilda tied to Greek myths in her compositions. The dichotomous presence of heat and wind, signifying repression and a path to relief and change, respectively, are expressed in these artworks. They exist in the liminal space between painting, sculpture, and installation, bringing together threads, wires, shadows, and light. There is a movement, an elegant pirouette like a breeze, subtle yet strong, pushing towards a new vision of the rich ‘Garden’ of representation and identity. The entire project is permeated by a particular feeling: that of freedom and the lack of regard that Hilda Doolittle showed the confines of her time’s conventions. This attitude was not a frivolous one as it stemmed from the self and social awareness that led her to go beyond the imaginable horizon. Seda Hepsev’s Rose Related is not a conversation with herself or a message directed only to women. The project is an important manifesto for the self-actualization of all. – Caterina Fondelli

Seda Hepsev (Istanbul, Turkey, 1978) lives and works in Zürich, Switzerland. The artist received her B.A. in Painting from Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts (2000), M.A. and Ph.D. in Art from Yildiz University Faculty of Arts and Design (2013). Her works include embroidery, sculpture, and installations that originate from drawings. Passion, space, and the subjectivity of the female body are central to her works. Body parts, beasts, distorted characters, and traditional motifs often appear in her work, which appears fragile, incomplete, and multi-layered. She builds her artistic approach, strolling through a visual language ranging from historical allegories, iconographies, illustrations, and mythologies to contemporary images. Layered textile paintings, hanging threads, and wires suggest narratives where fact and fiction are uncertain, and where protagonists remain mysterious and motives unclear. Fraught interpersonal dynamics, rendered with humor, empathy, and, at times, absurdity form the visual focus of her works. She makes stories visible through artistic techniques that require patience and compassion. It has the intimacy and fragility of human and non-human forms that transform into fantastic identities.
