Smach 2021

Call for Land Art, Dolomites

“SMACH – Constellation of art, culture & history in the Dolomites” is a land art project born in 2012. An outdoor biennial exhibition which supports the marriage of art and nature. Every edition features 10 artistic creations assembled in the heart of the Dolomites which are specifically created and adapted to different natural sites. The works’ aim is to spark the interest of visitors for art and highlight the area in which they have been assembled by creating a constant dialogue between art and nature.

International applications are accepted. Every edition has a new theme. The fifth edition of SMACH puts the the word ‘FRAGILE’ as it’s main focus. What do frailty and fragility mean in our world?

The call for SMACH’s 5th edition (2021) will select 10 works of art and installations created by individual artists or groups of artists. Their work will be exhibited in historically and culturally relevant locations across Val Badia during the SMACH biennial exhibition during July, August, and September 2021. The selected works’ aim to spark the interest of visitors in art not only as an autonomous language but also as a means to promote the land. The installations should deliver a vast and strong relation to the history, traditions, architecture, and the nature of the selected locations.

The selected artists/group of artists (10 in total) will each receive a prize money of €2,000 (net after taxes). The artists/group of artists will be responsible for sourcing their own material, transport and installation of their work in the chosen location within the agreed timeline. The installation of the works of art will occur between 31 May and 4 June 2021 (weather permitting). The positioning and installation of the work will be documented by taking pictures and video footage. “Artist residence”: half-board and accommodation will be offered to the artists for a maximum of 4 nights in San Martino in Badia while they install the work of art.
